For those not in the know, this is the show that gives you the answer first and you have to guess the question.

The fascination of Jeopardy!, the game that is a fusion of brain teaser, entertainment, and education, has enthralled audiences five nights a week for years. Center stage for the three decades since 1984 has always been host Alex Trebek known for his good-natured, guy-next-door personality. Art Fleming was the original host which aired on NBC from 1964 to 1975.

It’s no surprise that game shows are so popular and, for some, addictive. In fact, watching game shows is said to be helpful to mental wellness. So we found 23 years ago, in 1997, when the baby boomers were yet to turn 50, and when we conducted a national letter-writing contest sponsored by the United States Postal Service.

These letters are published in the book, Healthy Aging®…Inspirational Letters From Americans. From the hundreds of letters received, dozens of entrants advised future generations to watch Jeopardy! to keep their minds razor-sharp (only one entrant claimed to find mental stimulation in Wheel of Fortune).

Cancer Diagnosis Announcement

Last year, fans and even those who were not regulars were saddened to hear that Trebek had been diagnosed with Stage IV pancreatic cancer.

The outpouring of his fans and well-wishers was overwhelming and humbling to Trebek who recently turned 80 years old. There have been so many, in fact, that there is a glass case at the Jeopardy! studio filled with the mounds of support letters and cards.

As a private person, Trebek was initially reluctant to share the news with the world but felt he needed to stay ahead of the tabloids and wanted to let people know more about who they have been “cheering on for the past year.”

Book Jacket courtesy of Simon & Schuster. The game show was originally created by Merv Griffin. In a unique format, the contestants are given answers in the form of clues. Their job is to frame the question.

The show holds the Guinness World Records® title for the most Emmy® Awards won by a TV game show, and it received a Peabody Award for “celebrating and rewarding knowledge.” Jeopardy! is produced by Sony Pictures Television, a Sony Pictures Entertainment Company.
