The second half of your life could become all you have dreamed about for yourself—an opportunity to start over in any part of your life that needs a change. You may even become one of the growing numbers of centenarians (estimated to be almost 600,000 people by 2060)! That means you will have a lot of living to do!

In this new era of living longer, the traditional idea of retirement is becoming an outdated concept that needs to be blown up.

The new focus should be to “rewire.” Regroup and imagine the possibilities. You can become a parent at 50, start a new career at 60, launch a business at 70, or fall in love again at 80!

How can you start that process of rethinking your next chapter?

In my new book ROAR Into the Second Half of Your Life (Before It’s Too Late), I interviewed over 40 “reimagineers”—the pioneers among us who have already reimagined their lives in extraordinary ways. They have abandoned concepts like age-appropriate and focused on person-appropriate.

Each of these trailblazers exemplifies the dynamic process of ROAR: Reimagine yourself. Own who you are. Act on what’s next. Reassess your relationships.

Some of them are working in their current professions into their 70s, learning new skills and challenging any sense of ageism within their industries. And more importantly, they have freed themselves of self-imposed ageism, something that so many do to prevent their growth and development. Some are even going back to school in their 50s to chart an entirely new course, while many are starting fitness regimens that will turn them into marathon runners in their 80s.

Michael Clinton on top of the world

What are some of their secrets?

There is a shared sense of curiosity and positive belief that we can do so much more as we live longer, a deep focus on what is important to them, and a commitment to being true to themselves in their life goals and dreams.

Here are some of my favorite ROAR tips that can help you find your new path as you enter into the second half of your life:

Learning new skills is possible at any age.

You can do this in your profession or step out into a new direction. My decision to start a master’s degree at Columbia University in my 60s opened up a whole new world of understanding the nonprofit and philanthropy sector. There are several grants and scholarships available to adults, and in some states, people over 60 can go to college for free. Research to find the source of funding for you.

If you are stuck with what you might want to do, go back to your younger self. What did you dream about doing? It’s still inside of you. If you have a desire to become a writer, you can start now.

McGarvey Black reignited her teenage dream to be a writer in her late 50s. After over 100 rejections, she published her first novel at 62 and is now writing her fifth one! Her plan is to be a mystery writer for the rest of her life.

Find your support system.

Surround yourself with family, friends, and colleagues who cheer you on with your new set of life goals. If you decide to finally turn your hobby into a business, then go full steam ahead, and build your cheerleading squad that will help you become a true entrepreneur launching your new idea at 65 can have a 20+ year run, allowing you to be engaged in something that excites you and reinvigorates your zest for a new kind of daily routine.

Open yourself up to any and all opportunities that might come your way, including new love.

When my friend’s long-divorced mother bought a single season ticket to the opera, she didn’t expect to meet a widowed man who sat next to her. They are both in their late 80s now and have been married for over 20 years. Life’s serendipitous moments can lead to many surprises.

Michael Clinton in Antarctica

Own who you are.

Have you done a realistic assessment of your health numbers, your financial well-being, your accomplishments in life up to this point? What is missing? Don’t take it all on at once. Pick the one area you need a change in, and go deep into the plan to get you to a new place. You can’t move forward until you know where you are before taking that first step into your favorite future.

But, my favorite ROAR tip of them all?

Go to your 90-year-old self and look back on your life.

What have you contributed to your family, friends, and community? How do you want to be remembered? What is your legacy? Write your eulogy about the imprint that you have left as a human being.

Ultimately, what we once thought life should be like over 50 is changing in dramatic ways. We can all rewrite the script for what can become a dynamic new set of possibilities. You, too, can become one of the reimagineers among us. All it takes is your imagination, creativity, and the belief that your second half of life can be a whole new world for you.

ROAR forward.

Michael Clinton is the former president and publishing director of Hearst Magazines and is currently special media advisor to the Hearst Corporation’s CEO.
