Dr. Mom was right. Our conquer-cancer plate is color-full. The nutrients, called antioxidants, that give foods their color are also the ones that fight cancer best. And the deeper the color, usually the richer the antioxidant content of the food.

When you hear the term “antioxidants,” think “anti-cancer.” Here’s why. As your cells do their job as the energy-producing batteries of your body, they produce “exhaust,” aka oxidants, that can damage cell metabolism and upset the cell’s balance (cancer is a cell out of biochemical balance). Excess oxidants also cause wear and tear on the cell that affects cell health and is one of the basic causes of aging. Oxidants age you! Excess oxidants can also trigger DNA mutation, a root cause of cancer.

Enter antioxidants. Antioxidants help protect DNA from these excess oxidant attacks. These beautiful biochemicals in colorful foods—blue, red, green, yellow, orange, and purple—both slow your aging and help you prevent and heal from cancer.

Wild salmon is top CCF pick. Photo: Deposit Photos

The Top Conquer-Cancer Food

Become a sea-foodie. Our top CCF pick is . . . (drums rolling) . . . wild salmon, for two reasons: It makes sense, and it’s supported by science. Cancer and chemotherapy are frequently accompanied by malnutrition. Wild salmon is the most nutrient-dense food you can eat. It also contains more conquer-cancer nutrients—namely omega-3 DHA and EPA, vitamin D, astaxanthin, selenium, choline, vitamin B6, vitamin B12, and tryptophan—per calorie than any other food.

Omega-3 fats, the top nutrient in wild salmon, is the nutrient supported by the most science. Here’s a summary of what seafood science says:

The European Prospective Investigation into Cancer (EPIC), one of the largest “eat more fish, get less cancer” studies, analyzed the dietary habits of thousands of people from ten European countries. Those who ate 10 to 20 ounces of seafood per week were significantly less likely to get colon cancer.

Another study showed that people who ate the most fatty fish got less cancer, especially oral cancers, melanoma, pancreatic, colon, prostate, uterine, and breast cancers.

Seafood’s conquer-cancer effect seems to happen at the cellular level. As you learned on page 000, a healthy cell becomes a renegade cancer cell when it grows and multiplies out of control. Omega-3s help regulate the genes inside cells that control cell growth. Imagine an omega-3 molecule saying to a cellular growth gene, “Grow smart, grow safely.

Then, when you’ve finished your job, retire and make room for a younger and healthier cell” (see apoptosis, page 00).

Or, imagine a molecule, let’s call her Dr. O. Mega III, as an intracellular cancer doctor, prescribing DHA and EPA and saying, “Eat this, get less cancer.”

Omega-3s also “down-regulate,” or balance, the blood level of pro-inflammatory (pro-cancer) biochemicals such as COX-2 and prostaglandins that result from the SAD way of eating and can act as fertilizers for cancer cells.

If you are not yet motivated to think, “I want more omega-3s inside my cells and bloodstream,” read on. The healthier a cell is, the less chance it has of becoming cancerous.

The healthier the cell membrane, the healthier the entire cell. Omega-3s are the most important nutrient for healthier cell membranes. They are smart fats that help cell membranes become more selective and protective.

That’s just what you want for cellular health: membranes that let cancer fighters in, and keep cancer causers out.

Reprinted with permission from Help Heal Yourself from Cancer by William Sears, MD, and Martha Sears, RN (BenBella Books, Inc.).

[160,161

post-12822","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-fall-2022","category-fall-2022-features
["GET
