For you, it might be a family event, a situation at work, or a blowup that makes you feel you just can’t take anymore.

Hilary DeCesare. As part of California’s cutting-edge entrepreneurial community, I appeared outwardly successful. On the inside, however, I was not the confident woman I appeared to be. I was moving so fast, in a workaholic, superwoman fashion, that my underlying unease didn’t register — until I appeared on ABC’s “The Secret Millionaire.”

If you are unfamiliar with it, the show’s synopsis goes like this: Millionaires leave their luxurious world to delve deeper into the lives of ordinary people. Without revealing their true identity, they get to know those around them to do a good deed.

Helping others has always been at my core, personally and professionally. So when I was asked to be on the show, I saw it as a golden opportunity to make a bigger impact.

The goal of the show was to give non-profit organizations a voice, visibility, and much-needed financial support to raise awareness of their amazing work. As it turned out, I was the one who was helped in the end.

During production, the producers avoided the Hollywood treatment to keep the focus on the charities and the people they were serving. They set me up in a small house in one of the worst areas of Long Beach, California. “Wardrobe” was simple: no frills and no fuss. The point was to blend in, not stand out.

My house was filthy, so I spent my first night scrubbing and cleaning with Clorox and Lysol. It was not unusual to discover rat droppings in the morning. I learned from a neighbor that somebody had been shot on the corner the week before.

What had I signed up for? I thought of my kids, my own clean house. After that first night, I actually called the show producer and told her I didn’t think I was a good fit. But the producers gave me no out. They were trying to break me down, giving me only minimum wage for food purchases and removing anything that reminded me of home.

The producers had a reason for putting me in that position. Finding gratitude is often about stripping away the nonessentials to appreciate what’s truly important. In the case of “The Secret Millionaire,” they were putting me in a minimalist living situation so I could show up in a better place and meet the nonprofit’s volunteers and those they were helping on a more loving and empathetic level.

I realized I couldn’t leave; there was a much bigger lesson I needed to learn and share.

Coming into the show, I thought I was checking all the boxes. As a single mom, I was proud of my “juggling” capabilities. In the span of that week, however, I was meeting single moms who were living on the street with their kids — people who would have thought the ‘disgusting’ house I was in for one measly week was an unaffordable luxury.

During production, I got involved in everyday tasks, from shoveling horse poop for a charity that offered equine therapy to meeting the homeless and giving them sandwiches. I helped create a memorial for a young boy who had died.

The things I saw and the people I met truly opened my eyes. Granted, it was only a week, and it was only a TV show — a tiny, curated slice of real life — but the situation, the people, and the emotions involved were absolutely real.

Hilary DeCesare speaking to a group. Photo: Courtesy of the author

Being on the show forced me to look inward at the identity I had created. I’d been living almost entirely in my head — running a business, seeking investors, managing my family’s schedule, traveling, speaking, presenting, and being busy with calls and meetings. There was no room for my heart. Suddenly I was given a glimpse into a world from which I was so far removed. The experience jolted me into seeking some kind of perspective on my own life.

I started thinking about what I wanted to do in my work and in my personal life. For the first time in years, I started journaling, asking and answering questions such as:

What did I really want?

Who did I really want to surround myself with?

What was my legacy?

How did I want to show up for my kids and family?

What limiting beliefs were holding me back?

Being on “The Secret Millionaire,” I found myself far outside my comfort zone, in situations that allowed me to see who I had become was not in alignment with whom I wanted to be. Journaling about the experience, I realized I had been wrestling some big B.U.G.S. — my acronym for Beliefs Under Ground Surfacing.

I realized I had been burying my feelings, and in the process, I had created a barrier to my heart and true self. I started to question the impact I was having in my life and work and relationships. As I got to know the wonderful people on the show and the gut-wrenching scenarios they dealt with daily, my thinking changed about which beliefs I wanted to continue to live by and which were ready to be released so I could transform into my new aspirational identity.

As I awarded the checks to the charities in the unveiling ceremony, The body chills I experienced were relentless. I remember thinking, ‘I’m not who I was when I came into this’. I made a promise to myself to make it stick. I’m not going to lose this realization. I’m not going to let it disappear.

To this day, I still focus on leaning into my heart — feeling and being true to my own inner calling and helping others find theirs. In this work, I help people discover what I call 3HQTM, the sum total of our Heart, Head, and Higher Self. This is the catalyst by which we align our hearts and heads and can listen to truly hear our intuition. When we align these elements of our innermost being, it becomes a powerful accelerator for achieving our goals.

Questions to think about:

Do you feel aligned in your work/life right now? If so, or if not, why? What could you do differently, starting now, to become more aligned in your lifestyle?

Do you feel you send yourself mixed messages? Become aware of how this can throw you out of alignment.

What can you do to become a bigger advocate for yourself?

Hilary DeCesare is an entrepreneur and coach featured on the reality show “Secret Millionaire” who helps women turn typical life transitions into transformation Her new book, “RELAUNCH: Spark Your Heart to Ignite Your Life” details what’s beyond IQ and EQ … Learn more about her programs at TheReLaunchCo.com.

[165,167

post-13307","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-winter-2023","category-winter-2023-features
["GET
