Anticipating my alarm by just that one minute sets the tone for my entire day. I’ve trained my body to align with my goals for the day before I’ve even set them, and you can do the same. I believe suffering on a daily basis is extremely important, and I use fitness as that driver. My workout is always followed by a sauna and cold plunge daily.

Josh York taking the cold plunge. Photo courtesy of Josh York

If you want to make exercising a key feature of your day, you have to stop thinking about it as “making time” and assign an hour a day as “time made for exercising.” There’s no adding an extra hour into your day or turning back the clock on your body’s age. If you want to change how often you exercise, pick a time and show up. The rest will follow.

Adapt Your Mindset

You know your strengths and weaknesses better than anyone else; others can help you set goals and find your limits, but only your body can take you there. Exercising isn’t one of those halfway things. Either you do it, or you don’t.

Let’s say you’ve made the decision; you are going to commit to exercising every day. It doesn’t take much—even simple activities like going on a walk count as exercise. But when you set a goal for yourself of who you want to be, you must put in the work.

Every action leads you down a path. It’s your choice to follow in the tracks of who you have always been. Or, you can take a risk and be who you want to be.

Make A Routine

Every day is an opportunity to make a positive and meaningful change. I am a morning person, so I hunt down those quiet hours during my workout to focus on myself.

I am the founder and CEO of GYMGUYZ, host a podcast, have kids and a family, and always prioritize staying in shape. After 7:30 a.m., the world is awake, and I’m back on the work grind, but at 4:00 a.m., the only person I am accountable to is myself.

That’s the time I’ve chosen, but whatever time you pick, stick to it. Having discipline will be the difference between ‘trying’ and ‘doing.’ Some strength training exercises for beginners that I would recommend include squats, dumbbell curls, tricep rope extensions, a seated row, and shoulder presses.

Find Something That Speaks to You

Exercising does not, and should not, look the same for everyone. All of our lives are uniquely complicated and busy. What you enjoy doing might like totally different from what I enjoy.
Exercise can be something in your life that brings you joy, not just from the endorphins your body releases but from the activity itself.

Ski if you like skiing, lift if you like lifting, swim, hike, or bike, but do something every day that gets you moving. Go for activities that get you outside; being in nature with the sun on your face and fresh air filling your lungs is amazing for your holistic health. For some, exercise may be a kind of solo retreat to clear our minds, where others find community and motivation by working out with others.

Don’t Negotiate

When it comes to achieving your fitness goals, you have the power to be your biggest cheerleader or your worst enemy.

Letting negative thoughts creep in, telling yourself it can wait or doesn’t matter, is a like a poison. Once it takes hold, you realize there’s an easy way out, but it means you’ve lost sight of your goals.

Aging, getting busy, and being tired, aren’t excuses for letting your fitness goals slip. It’s time to decide here and now if you are going to let the excuses win. If your body can move, you can find a way to take care of it.

I’ve learned through my career that it can make all of the difference to have a trainer in the room pushing you just a little harder, reminding you what you are capable of.

Whoever you are, whatever your life circumstances, I can promise that committing to taking care of yourself will improve your physical fitness and quality of life.

Josh York is the founder and CEO of GYMGUYZ, an in-home and on-site personal training franchise.
