You Need All Three Of These

By Thomas J. Hine

I‘m not talking about a Maserati, a ski chalet, and a beachfront second (or third) home.

Instead, here are three things that are absolutely non-negotiable when it comes to enjoying your life, especially if, to be diplomatic, you aren’t a kid anymore.

The first is your health.

The second is your wealth.

And the third is time.

You’ve got to go three for three on this particular list … if you want to enjoy yourself and create happiness and connection with and for your loved ones.

Health is a no-brainer.

It doesn’t matter how much money you’ve got in the bank if you are schlepping, to use the technical term, to doctors’ offices, clinics, or hospitals. It’s hard to have fun if you’re in physical pain. Taking care of yourself is paramount, yet so few of us really commit to staying healthy.

We don’t even have a health care system in this country. We have a sick care system. Get sick, go to the doctor, get a prescription, have surgery … and fingers crossed, you get better.

That’s a broken model. Instead, we have to be our own primary healthcare providers, “dosing” ourselves with the right food, the right exercise or movement, and the right amount of rest. We cannot outsource our physical wellness to healthcare practitioners, as well-meaning as they may be, and as willing as they may be to cash our checks!

Next comes money.

They say that you can’t buy happiness, but you sure can rent it!

It’s tough to do things that are fun when, in retirement or in your later years (even if you’re still working), you haven’t got the proper resources. Many seniors are worried that they will outlive their money. They may have far more money than they could possibly need, but they’re still so gripped by that fear that they don’t want to spend anything on themselves beyond the necessities.

This shows us that you not only need enough money but that when you have it, you also need the courage to spend on the luxuries that will create great experiences and memories for yourself and those around you.

And finally, you need time.

Lots of people I know pride themselves on the fact that they are working just as hard in their 60s or even their 70s as they did decades earlier.

Or maybe they have to work that hard because they don’t have the nest egg they had been aiming for. Either way, if you’re fortunate enough to enjoy great health and great wealth, you’ve got to have the time or make the time to do the really fun things.

Motivator and author Brian Tracy talks about a place called “Someday Isle” — a magical, mystical island where people promise themselves they will finally make the time to do the things they were putting off.

Of course, there is no Someday Isle, and these people all too often pass away without having lived their dreams. You definitely don’t want to be in that group!

Now is the time to take your entire extended family on that vacation cruise or go with your loved ones to visit the historic or cultural sites that you’ve always wanted to see. Whatever you dream of doing, now is the time to make it a reality for yourself and those you love.

Part of the reason that so many people are successful is that they learned to postpone gratification. They worked hard in school, they worked hard in their careers, and they rose to the top in their fields.

That’s great!

Now, you’ve earned the right to stop postponing joy, to stop delaying gratification, and to start living as never before.

If you’re among the fortunate few who enjoy health, wealth, and time, I salute you. You are among life’s greatest winners. So go out there and enjoy yourself. You’ve earned it.

If you aren’t quite in that winner’s circle, don’t fret. You can take action right now to rectify those things. As the Chinese proverb tells us, the best time to plant a tree is 25 years ago.

The next best time is … today.

Health, wealth, and time. That’s the critical triumvirate that we all need to enjoy life. Where do you stand in relation to the Big Three?

Thomas J.
