I’m a forty-five-year-old man feeling the cool, clear air of Kapha. It’s time for my morning walk and run.

Pulse assessment reveals sixty beats per minute; Vat, Pitt, and Kaph are strong.

Palms joined, I begin the smooth postures of Surya Namaskar. I stretch comfortably, position after position. Flowing in sweet sequence, I breathe deeply through my nose. My body finds its balance feeling these postures. My pulse does not change, except perhaps Kaph slows a bit.

My feet feel the smooth track. I walk easily, relaxed, breathing only through my nose — ujai breath. Two, three laps. I enjoy the quietness within, though scores of children play and exercise in supervised groups, and others share the multi-lane track.

My pulse is still sixty beats per minute, with strong Vat and Pitt, deliberate Kaph. I tilt the plastic bottle up to sip water. I listen to my body feel its comfort as I walk.

My body feels royal. Everyone should breathe through their nose.

My performance phase this morning is one lap in a moderate run. I begin running at the starting mark. Early into the lap, I feel fresh wind ripple through my hair. The wind curls around the edges of my ears. My face bursts through the caressing breeze. A rush of prana bathes every pore.

Air measures my motion. I feel full. In this fullness, my legs extend forward, push down and up, thrusting all of me on and on. My upper body is stillness passing through space. My legs operate automatically. They churn by themselves as part of a mechanism driven by fullness, not effort.

Nothing exists around me except this feeling of fullness cutting through the wind, and I am that. Too quickly, the starting mark passes by. Am I here already? The marker recedes behind me, and I am walking.

I am amazed it has ended so quickly. I walk around the track. In the nerves and muscles of my back, tingling, thrilling chills begin to float up and down, chasing around my spine. These sensations increase, wash over my whole back. I am fascinated by these sensations.

I pass Toni standing beside a table. I look in her direction. She asks, “Feeling the bliss?”

“Good question,” I whisper, then answer, “I zoned. I’m thrilling all over.” She smiles and understands.

Still filled with radiant thrills of energy in my body, I continue walking.

Suddenly, my physiology, from neck to calves, fires tiny points of energy, like stars bursting in bliss. I feel as if every nerve connection is communicating special joy down the lines, on and on and on.

These energy stars transform my body into a galaxy of dynamic happiness felt, verified, and embraced in a wholeness of joy.

I check my pulse. The rate is unchanged: sixty beats per minute. Vat, Pitt, and Kaph are even. I am totally alive. Blissful nerve points keep firing less intensely as I cover two more laps walking. Finally, during Surya Namaskar, the little points fire gently and give way to a more usual sense of balance.

My morning walk and run ends. My tongue wraps around sips of water, and I am forty-five going on nineteen. I glide away and set my course for breakfast, aware of the divine physiology I always knew I could be.

Burton Milward, Jr., a retired attorney, who practiced criminal defense in Louisville, Kentucky, is the author of many books including Enlightenment.

[176,177

post-14083","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-fall-2023","category-fall-2023-features
["GET
