But it’s also a teacher, offering lessons in perspective and self-awareness if we’re willing to listen.

Many people feel embarrassed to discuss jealousy with friends or therapists, yet it can deeply affect their lives.

One example is George, a struggling artist, and his childhood friend Alex, a successful tech entrepreneur. George’s life was filled with financial hardships as he pursued his passion for painting, while Alex seemed to effortlessly ride the waves of success. Envy crept into George’s heart whenever he glimpsed Alex’s opulent lifestyle, filled with luxury cars and lavish possessions.

But one day, George decided to confront his feelings head-on. He sat before his easel and began to paint a portrait of Alex that would capture not just the surface veneer of his friend’s life but the hidden complexities beneath. As George painted, he delved into memories, reflecting on his and Alex’s divergent paths.

The resulting painting told a story of relentless effort, sleepless nights, and unwavering commitment. It depicted Alex not as a symbol of unattainable success but as a fellow traveler on life’s journey, grappling with his own challenges and sacrifices.

Through this act of artistic expression, George found not just a way to conquer jealousy but to honor his own journey and those around him.

George’s story serves as a poignant reminder that perceptions can often be deceiving. We may envy the seemingly serene lives of others, only to discover that they grapple with their struggles and insecurities behind closed doors. The glossy exterior we perceive may mask a reality far different from our assumptions.

It’s essential to challenge these idealized perceptions and recognize the humanity in others. Behind every facade of success lies a story of resilience, perseverance, and occasional failure. By acknowledging the complexity of others’ journeys, we cultivate empathy and understanding, fostering connection rather than comparison.

However, perhaps the most powerful antidote to jealousy is recognizing that external markers don’t solely determine success. In a world obsessed with achievement metrics, it’s easy to equate success with material wealth, fame, or accolades. Yet true success is far more nuanced, encompassing personal growth, fulfillment, and authenticity.

We must remember that success is subjective and shaped by our individual values, aspirations, and definitions of happiness. Success may mean pursuing a passion regardless of financial gain for some. For others, it may involve forging meaningful connections or positively impacting the world. By embracing this broader definition of success, we free ourselves from the confines of comparison and chart a course aligned with our true desires.

We have faced and overcome the problem of jealousy countless times in our lifetimes, yet we often forget the techniques and tools we’ve used to overcome obstacles that block us from our full potential.

Here are three techniques I have gleaned from my vast experience of helping people.

1. Introspect

In the journey from jealousy to empowerment, introspection plays a crucial role. We must examine the roots of our envy, uncovering the insecurities and fears that underlie our comparison with others.

Perhaps our envy stems from a sense of inadequacy or a fear of failure. Or maybe it arises from societal pressure to measure up to unrealistic standards of success. Whatever the case may be, confronting our envy with honesty and compassion allows us to transcend its grip and reclaim our agency.

Instead of viewing others’ achievements as threats to our worth, we can celebrate their successes as inspirations for our growth. We can recognize that their achievements do not diminish our potential but rather remind us of what is possible when we pursue our passions with dedication and resilience.

2. Acknowledge other people’s hard work

What might appear like a stroke of luck to you is actually the result of blood, sweat, and tears to accomplish what they’ve done. They are on their own unique journey with highs and lows, successes and failures. As an outsider, you only see a small fraction of their journey, usually only the successes, because that’s what people like to talk about.

Let us celebrate the successes of others as reflections of human potential rather than sources of envy or resentment. In doing so, we free ourselves from the shackles of jealousy and empower ourselves to embrace our true potential and live authentically.

We become architects of our own destiny, forging paths that honor our unique gifts and passions. And in the process, we inspire others to do the same, creating a world where comparison is replaced by collaboration, envy by empathy, and competition by camaraderie.

3. Realize the world needs your strengths and theirs

Ultimately, the journey from jealousy to empowerment is one of self-discovery and self-acceptance. It’s about embracing our unique strengths, acknowledging our limitations, and charting a course that aligns with our deepest values and aspirations. It’s about recognizing that each of us is on a distinct path, guided by our own inner compass and shaped by our individual experiences.

Let us reject the temptation to compare ourselves to others and instead cultivate a sense of gratitude for the richness of our own lives. Together, let us embrace our unique journeys, celebrate our successes, and uplift one another as we strive to create lives of purpose, passion, and fulfillment.

Rabbi Joel Stein, a prominent figure and bestselling author in the Orthodox Jewish community, is celebrated for his sought-after guidance in navigating complex mental challenges.
