With the federal government dietary guidelines changing every 5 years now since 1980, it\u2019s sometimes hard to keep up.<\/p>\n<p>No cholesterol or some cholesterol? Sugar or no sugar? Fats or no fats? Alcohol or no alcohol?<\/p>\n<p>Well, get ready. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/about\/news\/2023\/01\/19\/members-2025-dietary-guidelines-advisory-committee-announced.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">guidelines will be reviewed<\/a> again in 2025 and most likely will have updates.<\/p>\n<p>Here is a summary of the guidelines up for review: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dietaryguidelines.gov\/resources\/2020-2025-dietary-guidelines-online-materials\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dietary Guidelines 2020 &#8211; 2025 Review\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Smart Books<\/h3>\n<p>In the meantime, you can be your own secret agent like Maxwell Smart (aka TV series that ran from 1965 to 1970) and research what foods are the best to keep you healthy.<\/p>\n<p>There are several new books that might put you in the right direction.<\/p>\n<h3><em><a href=\"https:\/\/healthyaging.net\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/The-Smart-Mediterranean-Diet-Cookbook-Front-Cover-650.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-15102 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/healthyaging.net\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/The-Smart-Mediterranean-Diet-Cookbook-Front-Cover-650.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"506\" height=\"650\" srcset=\"https:\/\/healthyaging.net\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/The-Smart-Mediterranean-Diet-Cookbook-Front-Cover-650.jpg 506w, https:\/\/healthyaging.net\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/The-Smart-Mediterranean-Diet-Cookbook-Front-Cover-650-234x300.jpg 234w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 506px) 100vw, 506px\" \/><\/a><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em>The Smart Mediterranean Diet Cookbook<\/em><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/healthyaging.net\/magazine\/spring-summe-2024\/bookshelf-spring-summer-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Smart Mediterranean Diet Cookbook<\/em><\/a> is a sequel for authors Serena Ball and Deanna Segrave-Daly to their two previous books, The <em>30-Minute Mediterranea Diet Cookbook<\/em> and <a href=\"https:\/\/healthyaging.net\/magazine\/winter-2023\/food-6\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Sustainable Mediterranean Diet Cookbook<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The subtitle of their new book sums up the contents \u201c101 Brain-Healthy Recipes to Protect Your Mind and Boost Your Mood.\u201d The authors base their book on research showing the brain benefits of the Mediterranean diet. They note, \u201cPeople who live in Mediterranean regions and more closely follow the Mediterranean diet tend to have a reduced risk for dementia and cognitive decline and fewer psychiatric problems. It makes sense that this diet, originally linked to heart health, is also good for the brain, as healthy blood vessels that keep blood flowing to the brain reduce the risk of stroke and vascular dementia.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The authors, who are dietitians, share a list of foods they recommend you eat and why. Stevenson is the creator and host of <a href=\"https:\/\/themodelhealthshow.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Model Health Show<\/a>, a popular podcast focusing on a variety of health issues. His rise to success was bolstered by his ability to overcome his own issues at an early age.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReal food saved my life,\u201d Stevenson said. A great way to ensure that we hit that target is to get in a serving or two during that first meal of the day. One of the first times we made this dish was during a nutrition\/food tasting class my wife and I put together back in 2009. I remember it so clearly, because we left the class and headed straight to the theater to see Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I can tell you one thing, the walnuts in this recipe transform into a delicious faux salmon p\u00e2t\u00e9 far more effortlessly than the Transformers franchise trying to transition from Shia LaBeouf to Mark Wahlberg. If you know, then you know! I love serving these sushi rolls with miso mayo for dipping, but I also love them with a simple dipping sauce of soy sauce, rice vinegar, and sesame seeds, too. The wrapping and rolling may take a bit of practice, but even if your wraps aren\u2019t picture perfect, they are guaranteed to be delicious. Derick Santiago, a Southern California-based mixologist, agrees and offers 75 alcohol-free recipes in his new book, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/healthyaging.net\/magazine\/spring-summe-2024\/bookshelf-spring-summer-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Mocktail Club<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>According to Santiago, \u201cPerhaps because of unfamiliarity with the new alcohol alternatives, mocktails have suffered an undeserved bad reputation in some quarters. Some dismiss mocktails as being merely a combination of fruit juices, overly sweet, or just a kid\u2019s drink. Photo: Harper Point Photography<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Here are three to try:<\/p>\n<h3>Pin\u0303a Colada<\/h3>\n<p>Virgin pin\u0303a coladas, although tasty, are usually on the sweeter side. Good mocktails need something to balance the sweetness and add complexity. This Pina Colada version uses frozen pineapple chunks for added texture, and also uses a dark rum alternative that gives it a nice kick! You can use fresh pineapple chunks in place of the frozen pineapple chunks.<\/p>\n<h3>Maple Old-Fashioned<\/h3>\n<p>This mocktail draws inspiration from the timeless old-fashioned. Instead of using sugar and dissolving it with water, this version uses bourbon barrel\u2013aged maple syrup. This enhances the notes of oak and vanilla that come from the nonalcoholic bourbon. It also adds a nice texture to the drink. If you like, place a cinnamon stick in the finished drink as an extra garnish.<\/p>\n<h3>Red Sangria<\/h3>\n<p>If you\u2019re looking for a batch mocktail that\u2019s easy to make on a hot summer day when guests are over, look no further. This nonalcoholic take on a red sangria uses fresh fruits and dealcoholized red wine.
