On one side, there’s the glory of competition, the thrill of victory, and the pursuit of excellence. On the other hand, there’s immense pressure, relentless training schedules, and the ever-present fear of failure.

While physical preparation is essential, maintaining mental health is equally crucial for a successful career. What are the mental health challenges elite athletes face, and what are some actionable strategies to help them navigate these pressures?

Mental Health Challenges

Elite athletes often face a unique set of challenges that can take a toll on their mental health. The intense pressure to perform at the highest level, combined with the scrutiny from coaches, fans, and the media, can lead to anxiety, depression, and even burnout.

Social media has also added an equal sense of pressure to the above, incorporating multiple forms of individuals related to the athlete. One slight misstep or an error in judgment can mentally derail an athlete’s positive perception in minutes.

A study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine revealed that up to 35% of elite athletes experience symptoms of mental health disorders, including anxiety and depression, which is significantly higher than the general population.

The stigma surrounding mental health in sports further exacerbates the issue. Athletes are often expected to display toughness and resilience, which can prevent them from seeking help when they need it most. This stigma was highlighted in a 2019 study in the Journal of Clinical Sport Psychology, which found that athletes are less likely to seek mental health services compared to non-athletes despite experiencing similar or higher levels of psychological distress.

We also witnessed the reactions and blowback to an athlete in the Tokyo Olympics related to Simone Biles’s decision to withdraw from the competitions associated with supporting her mental health. So, we must focus on the strategies to support mental wellness.

For athletes who have made it to an elite level, they all logically know how important their mental health is, whether it’s a part of their daily routine or supported by their community, which is another story.

There are many ways an athlete can engage with strategies to support their mental wellness. A strong support network is essential for maintaining mental health. This includes family, friends, teammates, coaches, and mental health professionals. These individuals can provide a stable foundation and a safe space to discuss concerns and challenges. Athletes need trusted individuals they can turn to when the pressure becomes overwhelming.

Mindfulness techniques such as meditation, deep breathing, and progressive muscle relaxation can help athletes stay grounded and focused. A 2016 study from Harvard Medical School found that mindfulness practices can reduce stress and improve focus, which is particularly beneficial for athletes who need to maintain their mental edge during competition. By incorporating mindfulness into their daily routine, athletes can better manage the stress and anxiety of high-level competition.

Another form of maintaining mental wellness is setting realistic and achievable goals, which are crucial for preventing burnout. Athletes can focus on personal growth rather than external validation and break down large goals into smaller, manageable steps.

Setting goals may be a standard practice when it comes to their strength and athletic prowess, but intentionally remembering that this applies to mental strength as well is key. Incorporating mental wellness strategies helps maintain motivation and reduces the risk of feeling overwhelmed by their ambitions’ intensity.

Athletes are no strangers to setbacks. It’s part of the game. Remembering that setbacks are a natural part of the journey and maintaining perspective can help them navigate these challenges with resilience.

The Importance of Recovery

Something we don’t talk enough about is recovery, which is not just about physical rest; mental recovery is equally important.

The old-school guidance of ‘pushing through’ the pain doesn’t work. Adequate sleep, engaging in relaxing activities, and taking breaks from competition are vital for maintaining mental health.

Research has shown that lack of sleep can exacerbate symptoms of anxiety and depression, making it essential for athletes to prioritize rest and relaxation. By incorporating mental recovery into their training regimen, athletes can ensure they are fully prepared physically and mentally for the demands of competition.

For some, a not-as-well-known topic for athletes is The U.S. Army’s Holistic Health and Fitness (H2F), a prime example of how a comprehensive approach to health can benefit athletes. H2F focuses on optimizing physical, mental, and spiritual readiness, recognizing that performance is not just about physical strength but also mental resilience.

Another resource is sports psychologists and therapists, who can offer specialized support tailored to athletes’ unique pressures. Professional help is essential in managing anxiety, overcoming setbacks, and building mental resilience.

The American Psychological Association notes that therapy can help athletes develop coping strategies, improve focus, and enhance performance, making it a valuable resource for those struggling with mental health challenges. Access to professional support should be normalized and encouraged within the sports community.

Sports organizations themselves are just as important as professional help. These organizations play a crucial role in supporting athletes’ mental health. By providing resources, fostering a supportive environment, and promoting open discussions about mental health, organizations can help reduce stigma and encourage athletes to seek help. Initiatives like mental health awareness programs, access to counseling, and planned mental health days can make a significant difference in an athlete’s well-being.

The journey of an elite athlete is as much a mental challenge as a physical one. By employing strategies to manage stress, building a strong support network, and seeking professional help when needed, athletes can maintain their mental health while achieving their goals.

It’s also imperative to embrace a holistic approach, like the H2F program, which integrates mental resilience into the broader framework of athletic training. It’s essential for athletes, coaches, and organizations to prioritize mental well-being alongside physical performance.

As the conversation around mental health in sports continues to grow, the hope is that more athletes will feel empowered to seek the help they need and take proactive steps to protect their mental health just like they do their physical health.

Ryan Young is the Marketing and Social Media Manager at Give an Hour, a national organization empowering people to take control of their mental health, fostering a society of resilience and well-being.
