Strawser

Every person has an inner superpower that can accomplish revolutionary change. Yet very few experience the full potential of this awesome indwelling energy. But now, merging science with personal spirituality yields a step-by-step process to discover, test, experience, and release this power for life-changing transformation.

The pursuit of aging healthfully is important, but why not expand this into exceptional, enthusiastic, vibrant aging?

Imagine a life where we’re excited, resilient, and better equipped to handle adversity, where each day can open wonder and love. It’s possible but may require a fresh perspective and new actions.

A few questions for consideration to start:

Do you control your mind, or does your mind control you?

Do you worry?

Do you let others “push your buttons” or settle for a mediocre life?

Well, all these and many more center on our thinking – our magic, magnifying, marvelous mind.

To enjoy exceptional aging, we need to transform our minds into a good friend instead of an enemy that can drag us into an emotional pit, freeze us with anxiety and fear, or mire us in complacency. How do we do this? How can we control our minds?

Suppose our willpower and determination have proven insufficient. What can direct our thought-life into the channels that yield our best life, that let us see adversity as opportunity, apparent defeat as an opening for something better, or relationship problems as challenges for growth?

The good news is that you already have this power and only need to open the channel to this hidden reservoir and allow the energy to flow.

Recognizing that enjoying an “enthusiastic life” might be possible offers a hint. Enthusiasm: from the Greek word enthousiasmos, which means to fill with a delightful spirit or even more basically referring to the inner Thuse; the “Spirit or God within.”

Many are discovering an age-old secret that should not be a secret: Every person has an innate spiritual energy, an actual indwelling power, that can be accessed and unleashed for dramatic life improvements.

We have been told that “Everyone has the Buddha within.” (Awakening the Buddha Within, 1998, Das), “Nor will they say ‘Look here or look there’ for the kingdom of God is within you.” (Luke 17:21 NKJV) and “When a man sees that the God in himself is the same God in all that is, he is indeed on the highest path.” (The XII, 27-28 The Upanishads)

This is the Higher Power that many twelve-step groups seek to break the chains of addiction and alcoholism—actually to overcome the physical dependency and mental obsession. It is the power researched and reported by Dr. Joe Dispenza in Becoming Supernatural, Gregg Braden’s multiple works, Tony Robbins and many others. It is very real and accessible to everyone.

Here are some steps:

Opening the channel:

Opening the channel to our inner power requires free-will choice and actions. By being open-minded and receptive, we can build a relationship with our inner spirit through dedicated time, communication, and commitment.

Dedicated time:

“Want to,” desire and intention yield few results without action. We set aside a few minutes each morning for action. We read inspiring or guiding daily thoughts from the numerous available resources. (Totally Within is a daily reflection focusing on growing this relationship with our inner spirit, but there are many others. Find one that fits you.)

Communication:

Rest in silence for a few minutes and open the communication channel. Talking to our indwelling spirit is simply just like talking to a good friend. It can be out loud or just mental speak. We express our desire to grow, to be the best version of ourselves. We can ask for guidance, peace, a quieting of our tumultuous mind, relief from anxiety, and the belief that we might be a little more patient and tolerant today and seek the strength to do what we must do.

Listening can be a challenge. The outside world’s noise—television, radio, our phone, and on and on—offers constant distractions. Again, we commit to some specific time. We sit quietly, take a few deep, relaxing breaths, and open our hearts and minds to the stillness. Listening to some guided meditation, relaxing sounds, or peaceful music often helps.

Commitment:

Developing new habits takes commitment. We may find ourselves skipping the work or making a half-hearted effort. But if we really want the solution and transformation, we keep trying. Establishing accountability helps. We can share our successes and shortcomings with another person on the same path or journal the daily details to review and inspire us forward.

Keeping the channel open:

Burn this axiom into your mind: “Whenever I am disturbed, there is something wrong with me.” This does not mean we must be a doormat, to let others take advantage of us, but we must learn to handle challenging situations with peace, dignity, and poise. We develop skills to separate our inner life from our outer life and take control of how we feel, think, and act no matter what is happening in the outer world.

Of course, we will sometimes allow work, family, traffic, and other people to interfere with our peace, but now we know that the problem and solution lie within us, that no person or event has the power to “push our buttons” unless we give them that power. We open our channel to the indwelling spirit and allow our power to flow. We pause, breathe three or four deep breaths, say “Thank you, please help me” to our spirit, and repeat this mantra until we feel peace.

Making changes in our life:

The engineering approach to personal change identifies five major factors necessary to enjoy a life transformation: We must accept that we have a problem, want to solve the problem, identify a solution that works, implement this solution–do the work, and perform the necessary maintenance.

Change without all five factors will be temporary, sporadic, and fragmented. But we have joined the fortunate few and now have a solution that produces the desired results. The rest is up to us.

After experiencing the transformation, we take action to prevent major upsets. We set six alarms on our phone to remind us to take a one- or two-minute exercise. Here, we simply breathe deeply a few times and repeat our five-word mantra, perhaps expanding it to, “Help me think thoughts that are good for me, to treat people as you would have me treat them, to release any anger, guilt, or self-centered thoughts that bother me for the next hour.”

Action—deliberate, effective, consistent, and persistent—yields results where all the desires, intentions, and wishes fall short.

Thomas J.
