It’s against time. Everyone you talk to will tell you that Father Time will catch up to you eventually…except me. I believe life is a series of choices.

If you want to think you’re old, that’s your choice. I also believe you’re either getting better or worse. There’s no in between, so you need to decide which way you want to go.

Think about this: When you fight a riptide, you get tired and worn down, right? Time can be the same way. That’s why you want to go with the flow, more specifically: your flow. We come home each day, and we’re tired. Did you ever realize that we’re not that tired from what we did? We’re usually tired from the things we didn’t do. We’re worn down by the to-do’s we didn’t do. Checking things off you to-do list actually charges you up.

The Power of Doing

This is why you want to utilize the following two-step formula in all aspects of your life.

Step 1: Figure out what needs to be done.

Step 2: Go out and do it!

Saving for retirement, letting your family know you love and appreciate them, making time to get physically fit; these are things you need to plan to do. Write them down, and keep them in mind. They don’t just happen automatically. We all get twenty-four hours a day. That’s enough time to squeeze in everything that’s important to you. Have a list of things to do each day, and keep your charge closer to 100% versus 0% by crushing this list.

Balancing Brain and Body

After a long day at the office, I’m mentally worn down. I go to the gym and let my mind recharge while I physically put in work. That brings my mindset back to an optimum level. It’s a balance of brain and body. We can’t skip work. We all have to pay the bills. View other priories in your life the same way. I don’t entertain if I’ll work out each day. I simply give myself the option of when. When you dedicate time to all of the areas that are important to you, you feel energized and fulfilled. This never gets old!

Building Positive Momentum

Momentum is an important factor because it accelerates in one direction or another, for better or worse. It can work for you or against you. This is why you want to employ the power of positive streaks in important areas of your life. You can be on a bad streak of unhealthy habits or a good streak of working out. Ask yourself if you have positive or negative momentum in your life. Personally, when I’m out of shape, nothing else feels very good. Stop negative momentum by saying “no more.” Slam on the brakes to unhealthy habits, and get on a positive streak.

Sure, it’s hard at first, but when momentum builds, tasks get much easier. Starting to be physically active and eating healthy are easy to talk about, but hard to do. Why don’t more people do it? Because it’s uncomfortable. The first few days are viewed as pain and struggle.

There’s a better way to look at this, though. It’s result hunting. No reward will come to you without effort. I love working out, but it’s not because I actually love it. I love the results that come from it. I don’t have any problem doing it because I’m getting exactly what I want. It’s the same thing with eating healthy. Once you get a good streak going, you’ll love your momentum and your results, too. Don’t trade short-term comfort and happiness for long-term unhappiness and unhealthiness. That’s a bad deal!

Living Rich in Every Way

More than ever, your age means virtually nothing when it comes to health and wealth. Your goal should be to live a rich life in every facet at any age. Going with your flow means spending more time doing what you want to do. When you’re enjoying your time, you’re living your best life. You’re thriving! That’s exactly what we were created to do.

We all need to do more of it, much more!

We, ironically, trade time with money as our careers build. The more money you accumulate over time, the less time you have to spend it. Clearly, there needs to be a balance struck of how best to spend your time and money. Over the past twenty-five years, I’ve helped people do both as a certified personal trainer turned financial advisor.

You tackle your fitness and financial goals for a reason. That reason is to be able to ditch the office and things that hold you back. This allows you to get out and about without limitations: to simply be able to have fun and pursue happiness! Although you’re not able to retire yet, you should still aim to minimize things that suck the life out of you. Your doctor just called and said you don’t have to, and shouldn’t, wait until retirement to pursue happiness and fulfillment.

Don’t Wait for Retirement to Live

We need to live now, not later. Americans are known for their “live to work” lifestyle and mindset. Many other countries work to live. They balance their time and money better over their entire lives. I encourage you to stop living a “someday life.” There’s no good reason why today can’t be the first day you intentionally live with purpose. Retirement shouldn’t be the time you ask yourself who you want to be and what you want to do. As Arnold Schwarzenegger famously said, “Do it now!”

Find Your Potential, Passion, and Purpose

How do you do that, you ask? You stop focusing on the G’s in your 401k and start focusing on the 3 P’s in your life:

Potential, Passion, and Purpose

I believe we’re all pre-wired for success and happiness, but there’s a catch. You need to provide the power to live “on!” Living on means being excited to begin each day; to view life as an adventurous journey. When you break free of stagnation and live a life with passion and purpose, you unlock your potential for an extraordinary life. Until then, there’s a parallel life to the one you’re living that’s waiting for you. Life doesn’t suck unless you choose to let that be true.

Know Where You’re Going

Now is the time to think deeply while honestly asking yourself two questions: where are you in your life now, and where do you want to be? Like GPS, you can’t get to where you want to go without a clear destination. You also can’t get there without knowing your starting point.

Take at least fifteen minutes undistracted each day to think about these two things. You absolutely can get to your destination if you can vividly see where you’re going. To get you there, you’ll need to load up on “why.” Why are you here? Why do you save and work hard? Living life without passionate reasons is like putting low-grade fuel in your premium vehicle. You can get around for a while, but eventually you’re going to break down.

Thrive at Any Age

This winter, find the fuel you need to power you to where you want to go. You can’t outrun time, but you can run on high-quality time. Inject more passion and purpose in your life by identifying what an extraordinary life looks like to you.

Consider the following areas: fitness, finance, mindset, family, fulfillment, and legacy. You can be a ten out of ten in all categories. Why? Why not! You only live once, so you might as well get your money’s worth!

Choose to start working towards being the best version of yourself. When you wake up one day and realize you don’t want to live any other life besides your own, you’ve achieved the pinnacle of thriving. If you want to get the most out of this world around you, make a vow to start to learn who you are, how you’re wired, and how you can get the most out of yourself.

When you’re in a race, your heart is beating, your senses are sharp, and you’re in the driver’s seat. There doesn’t have to be a finish line at any age. You can keep going as long as you choose to. Living a rich life with continuous passion and purpose leads to unlimited fulfillment. That never gets old.

As long as you keep doing the things that make you feel this way, you’ll never get old either!

Joel Steele, is the author and keynote speaker of Life Switch: How To Experience The Power Of Living ON By Discovering Your Potential, Passion & Purpose.
