My breathing slowed. My muscles relaxed. The fatigue I had been feeling seemed to melt away. By the time I stood up, I felt refreshed rather than exhausted.

At first, I thought the experience was just a chance event. But then I noticed something else.
After a family gathering one evening, I had eaten more than I should have. Feeling uncomfortable, I sat in my rocking chair and began rocking gently. Before long, my discomfort eased. Once again, I wondered whether there was something special about this simple movement.

I became very curious.

I began paying attention to how I felt whenever I rocked. I noticed that my busy mind seemed to quiet down. Every day worries felt less urgent. I felt calmer, more focused, and surprisingly refreshed. What started as an occasional habit gradually became part of my daily routine.

As an 85-year-old who has spent decades exploring ways to stay healthy and active, I found myself asking the question:

Could something as simple as a rocking chair actually be good for us?

The more I researched, the more intrigued I became.

Like many older adults, I spend far more time sitting than I would like. Health professionals raise alarms about the dangers of prolonged sitting, linking it to a wide range of serious health issues such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity, diminished mobility, and even certain types of cancer. Unfortunately, most seated activities require little to no movement, further compounding these risks.

A rocking chair is different.

Although you remain seated, your body is constantly making small adjustments. Your legs, core muscles, and balance systems remain engaged. The gentle rhythmic motion encourages movement rather than complete stillness.

Researchers have become increasingly interested in the potential benefits of this type of movement.
Some rehabilitation specialists use gentle rocking movements to help patients regain mobility, reduce discomfort, and promote relaxation.

Research at the University of Rochester School of Nursing found that nursing home residents who regularly used rocking chairs experienced improved psychological well-being, requested less pain medication, and showed improved balance.

While rocking is certainly not a miracle cure, the findings helped explain why I felt so good after incorporating it into my own life.

Another concern that comes with aging is the risk of falls.

Falls are one of the leading causes of injury among older adults, with healthcare expenses associated with non-fatal falls projected to exceed $100 billion annually by 2030. As individuals age, they often experience a gradual decline in key physical abilities, resulting in diminished balance, coordination, and lower-body strength. This decline significantly increases the likelihood of experiencing falls, making it a critical concern for the aging population.

Could regular rocking help maintain some of those abilities?

Over the past year, I have felt steadier on my feet and more aware of my posture than before I began rocking regularly.

I have noticed other changes as well.

My joints seem less stiff. My hip arthritis bothers me less than it once did. I move more comfortably throughout the day. Perhaps most importantly, I simply feel better.

Of course, my rocking chair is not a substitute for exercise. I still walk, stay active, and pay attention to my diet and overall health. But the chair has become a valuable addition to my daily routine.

One benefit I did not expect was how relaxing rocking would become. The gentle back-and-forth motion helps me slow down and unwind after a busy day. I find that it quiets my mind and helps me feel less stressed. For me, those few minutes of relaxation are just as valuable as the physical benefits.

My Rocking Routine

People often ask how I use my rocking chair. I keep it simple.

Most days, I spend 10 to 20 minutes rocking after I exercise. In the evenings, I spend another 10 to 20 minutes enjoying the same routine while reading a book or reflecting on my day.

As I rock back and forth, I relax and let my mind unwind. This simple practice has become one of my favorite daily habits. When I have a choice of seats, I always choose the rocking chair because of its calming rhythm.

As with many healthy habits and wellness routines, the benefits may come from regular practice rather than occasional use.

Rocking Tips

Use a sturdy chair on a non-slip surface.

Get up slowly to avoid dizziness, and use armrests for support if needed.

Ensure that your feet can comfortably rest flat on the floor.

Use the momentum of a forward rock to transfer into a full stand using armrests for support.

Roll through your arches and push off with your toes for a better lower-leg workout.Keep a 3-foot perimeter around the chair completely clear of electrical cords, rugs, pets, and furniture.

Looking back, I never imagined that a simple rocking chair would become such an important part of my daily routine.

I still use my rocking chair every day. What began as a place to rest after exercise has become a simple way to relax, reflect, and stay mindful of the habits that support my well-being.

At 85, I have learned that not every wellness practice has to be complicated.

Roy Blacksher, 85, is the author of Secrets of a Super Ager: Heading for 100.
