I run the plank,” a friend’s young son, Peter, announced as he trotted down the diving board, jumped with all of his might and did a cannonball that resulted in a mini tidal wave.

This kid was pretty sure Tick-Tock, the Crocodile featured in Disney’s Peter Pan, was not down below. This Peter was ready for whatever might happen as he hit the water. Belly flop, no problem. Water in the nose–nah, not a worry at all. “Running the plank” was an adventure for this boy.

Eight-year old Peter’s fearless abandon to jump off the diving board made me think of how many people as they grow older stop “running the plank.” For them, it’s more like “walk the plank.” They worry, they are cautious, they are stuck in a rut.

What is it that stops some people from running forward, diving into new adventures? Experiences and character are key reasons. It might also be a loss of childhood excitement for adventure.

It does not have to be that way. You, too, can “run the plank.” It’s never really too late. It just takes a little courage and a decision to get going.

If you have somehow stalled in your ability to move forward, there is no better time to shake that feeling than the fall season. It is filled with promise and possibilities. The crisp autumn air combined with that old “back to school” feeling helps enormously.

Healthy Aging Fall 2015 Issue

Our fall issue of Healthy Aging® magazine is here to help also.
