Now what?

For many people leaving lifelong careers, one of their biggest concerns is having lots of time and not knowing what to do with it.

“Going back to work is a difficult decision to make, but employment has many financial and social benefits,” says financial advisor Jeff Bucher, president of Citizen Advisory Group, a firm that engages its community with education and charity efforts.

“Many people don’t know if they can afford the time they have left, which may not be yielding a satisfying lifestyle. After I review the technical details surrounding my clients’ finances, such as protecting and growing their money, I sometimes offer a bit of unexpected advice: consider your employment options.”

Many who take his advice often do so more for overall happiness than money. Work gives us structure, purpose and a social network. Bucher currently has clients that have gotten jobs as a second encore at the golf course, a flower shop and as a charter bus driver.

Bucher reviews many fun options that second and later-in-life career seekers often find appealing, many of which are examples his clients have gotten after heeding his advice.

Photo: Pixabay

Golf course: This is a popular option since so many people love golf. And, if you are a morning person, work at a golf course is perfectly suited for you. Some popular jobs available at a golf course include golf shop staff, ranger, starters and golf course maintenance. A benefit that many golf course employees receive is free golf for you and a guest.

Photo: SpeedKingz Shutterstock

Retail: A smiling face and a pleasant disposition has earned many later-in-life job seekers positions as greeters at places like Walmart, but there are other stores that may better fit your personality. That may include cosmetics at a department store like Lord & Taylor or Nordstrom, or the shoe department at Neiman Marcus. Think about where you like to shop. Employees usually receive employee-only discounts on merchandise.

Sporting venue: If you love sports, consider being an usher at a venue. Ushers assist fans to their seats and help answer any questions the fans may have. You may have to walk up and down steps for long periods of time. If you have trouble with steps or other physical demands, ask what physical requirements are included. The job may have perks, such as free tickets.

Tour guide/charter bus driver: A tour guide’s job is to introduce people to places that they are unfamiliar with, which may include wineries, museums and a city’s historical locations. Many tour guides double as charter bus drivers, also known as motor coach drivers. Such drivers are responsible for addressing passenger complaints, keeping the tour on schedule and accounting for all passengers.

Norman Rockwell model Wray Gunn gives a tour to visitors at Norman Rockwell Museum. Rather than show people around a district or city, a docent, for example, gives visitors tours within a museum, a place that’s often looking for teachers in painting or photography classes.

Theme park/zoo: If you want to brag about your job to your grandkids, look into the local zoo or theme park. Some of the most popular jobs for older adults at these parks include ticket takers, working at a merchandise stand or helping assist guests at an information booth. People who work at the zoo or a theme park often receive free admission anytime that they are not working.

Your current or former job: This one may throw you for a loop, but it could be perfect. You’ll likely maintain the same salary as the rest of your earning years (it’s something you already know and are good at) and, many people derived much satisfaction from their profession. You may find new freedom in knowing that this job is more optional than before, which may engender a sense of freedom and an outside-the-box mentality. A benefit of working somewhere where you have worked at previously is that you will already know your coworkers and work environment.

In addition to providing yourself with a helpful, supplemental form of income in your golden years, it’s helpful to remember that the simple life costs money, too.

“How much money do you spend just by staying in your house throughout the year? At home, your biggest expense will probably be the electric bill. You’ll be preoccupied on your computer or on the television.” Bucher said. “Whether it’s a hot summer or a cold winter, you’ll want air conditioning to feel comfortable. And, for many people, the less active they are, the more likely they’ll eat more, which means a larger grocery bill.”

Those expenses, however, assumes a life at home, but most people want to mix up their schedule every now and then. Trips to the mall, the movies or a vacation get expensive.

“All of us should be able to go on vacation once in a while,” Bucher said, “but a job can help ensure you’re not nickel-and-diming yourself throughout your later years.”

Jeff Bucher is president of Citizen Advisory Group, and is an Investment Advisor Representative of AlphaStar Capital Management, an SEC Registered Investment Advisor.

How to have fun during your “next phase” by continuing to work.
