I haven’t been very good about keeping in touch with friends from high school. But every 10 years, a handful of the most connected of my classmates from adolescence go all out to bring everyone together.

Another one is coming up soon and that song by punk rock group The Clash keeps ringing in my ears: “Should I Stay or Should I Go?”

There’s nothing like a high school reunion to make you realize how the world, and lives, change in 10 years. Yearbooks have gone digital. Facebook and LinkedIn have made old classmates more accessible. And if you’re a Gen X’er or a Baby Boomer, at least one of your tech-savvy classmates has built a class website. If not, just Google your school and class year for a trip down memory lane.

All of our reunions have followed pretty much the same pattern: a Friday night meet and greet, a Saturday tour of the old (or likely renovated or replaced) high school, a Saturday night dinner, and perhaps a Sunday brunch hosted by and for some of the classmates you knew best.

Of course, not all of your graduating class shows up. I’ve heard that a turnout of about 30 percent is a good number by the time you get to your 30th. Sadly the In Memorium and Missing Classmates lists are longer and quite a few of the “Whatever happened to …” questions remain unanswered.

Some people seem shorter and some heavier, some look amazingly fit, but overall, most I’ve seen are poster children for Healthy Aging®. They are remarkably physically fit, are sharp, and have followed their passions or are doing so now.

In fact, what I notice most beyond the no hair, white hair, pounds, and wrinkles are the smiles. Whether retired or still working, single or divorced, childless or grandparents, wealthy or not so wealthy, these folks are happy and satisfied with where they are in life. They chuckle with old girlfriends and boyfriends, recall past exploits and teen foibles, and are amazed at the diverse paths taken by the class heroes and the blossomed wallflowers.

So, if you’re reading this and on the fence about going to your next reunion, I say GO!

Carolyn E.
