From the beginning, the author is honest and supportive, convincing anyone that traveling by themselves isn’t a lonely experience but an adventure.

The author lays out step by step the best way to travel alone. Maldon begins by outlining what to do before going on a big trip such as taking a weekend getaway on your own before going on a long trip to make sure you don’t mind being alone. She also explains how to research the places you want to go while on your trip.

One issue with traveling on your own is avoiding scams. The chapter “Common Scams” presents different scams such as hackers on free Wi-Fi zones and pickpockets in the streets and how to avoid them during your travels. Suggestions for staying healthy—including drinking water and taking care of yourself if you have jet lag or sunburn—are some more invaluable tips that Maldon clearly shares based on her own mistakes and mishaps.

The text is supplemented with stories of revolutionary women from the 19th and 20th centuries who traveled alone before any modern technology or good advice was given. Maldon also gives suggested destinations of some of the best places to travel on your own; including Barcelona, Spain because of its outdoor lifestyle with a plethora of activities, places to see, and shopping that can keep you busy on your own. Straightforward, witty, and refreshingly honest, this little book is the next best thing to a real travel companion.

The Solo Travel Guide: Just Do It by Dee Maldon, published by Hookline Books, ©2016.
