Think Again

By Elana Beckett

If you’re like most people, then you enjoy visiting new places. But packing and getting from point A to point B can be a hassle. With deciding what to pack, trying to abide by the airport security measures, and helping family and friends with their suitcases, traveling tends to be exhausting. Even trying to find space in the overhead compartment can be a challenge. And once we reach our destination, let’s just hope that our checked suitcases have arrived with us.

Suitcases seem standard (a box plus wheels and a handle) and can be difficult to drag around crowded airports and train stations. But fortunately, luggage companies like Crash Baggage, , Barracuda, and G-RO have redesigned the ways in which we carry our jackets, shirts, and socks—making traveling easier.

The Worry-Free Luggage

Crash Baggage has embraced how we travel, acknowledging that we’re bound to nick our suitcases from time to time. We squeeze our suitcases into packed trains or tight car trunks and wheel our luggage through crammed airports. And our checked luggage may get dinged when it knocks against other suitcases or slides across the overhead compartments on planes…

So, why not use a suitcase that you won’t have to worry about damaging? This is exactly the concept that came to Francesco Pavia, founder of Crash Baggage. Crash Baggage luggage comes pre-dented, but remains stylish.

Medium Passion Red-Crash Baggage

“We are different from other luggage brands because we want to [sic] communicate and sell our spirit and philosophy of the ‘crash’ and ‘handle without care’ and people buy because they like it not because they need it,” Pavia said. “It’s a design luggage but it’s also real luggage for travelers with all the best technical details on market.”

Made from polycarbonate (PC) and acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) materials, Crash Baggage products are sustainable and lightweight, making them ideal for travel. Crash Baggage offers a variety of collections, including Collection Bright, which features metallic colors. Pavia and the Crash Baggage team are planning to market smart crash luggage in the future.

The All-in-One Suitcase

Crash Baggage luggage manages to keep travelers worry-free. But Fugu Luggage eliminates the need to buy more than one suitcase: It contains both carry-on and checked luggage in the same piece!

Fugu

That’s right—Fugu Luggage expands into a much larger suitcase. Underestimate the amount you need to pack? Fugu Luggage has you covered. Simply use the electric pump to inflate the walls of the suitcase. And if you’re just headed out for the weekend, deflate the suitcase to its carry-on size.

With its protective netting and shock-absorbent sides, Fugu Luggage was made for traveling anywhere. Not to mention, it can double as a chair or a table when it’s inflated. Additionally, the luggage-locator GPS feature allows travelers to find out where their luggage is. The Fugu team is working on a new model to be produced around March 2018.

Tray Tables Up, Please!

An airplane seat isn’t the only place to find a tray. Barracuda carry-on luggage also has a built-in tray table that may be used for laptops, books, or even a cup of coffee. Just unzip the pouch on the handle, click the button, and pull the tray table up and out. And voilà! You’re left with a more comfortable way to read, work on your device, or grab a snack before taking off. Conveniently, the suitcase also comes with a USB charger (and doubles as a flashlight), allowing you to charge your device without having to compete with other travelers for those scarce outlets located around airports and train stations.

Barracuda

Besides these hidden features, you may have noticed the strangely shaped handle of the Barracuda suitcase. Not at all like the thin handle we’re used to, the swivel handle rotates 360 degrees and locks in place, making it easy to find the most comfortable position for your hand. No more sore wrists from lugging suitcases!

This piece of luggage might not look it, but it collapses into a storage bag that you may hang up in the closet or place under the bed. You could also opt to purchase the portable digital scale, so you’ll never have to guess how much your suitcase weighs ever again.

Snow, Rain, or Dirt? No Problem

Most suitcase features are designed for waiting in airports or train stations. But what about the time we spend outside, getting to our destinations? G-RO has created a carry-on suitcase with extra-large axel-free wheels, making it easier to trek through any terrain—like uneven city sidewalks, sand, dirt, and streets. The bottom of the suitcase is waterproof, so there’s no need to worry about snow or rain. And impact-resistant ABS covers ensure that the rubber wheels won’t get damaged. In case you’re still not convinced of this product’s durability, know that it’s made from ballistic nylon, which is the same material that protected WWII air personnel from debris. Shock-absorbent panels on the top and sides of the suitcase keep possessions in good condition.

It’s true that this piece of luggage masters outdoor terrain but don’t think that this product isn’t equipped for technology we wouldn’t want to bring outside during a snowstorm. The suitcase comes with two USB ports and a charging station. The outside pocket is built for a small laptop. And it also includes TSA locks, which are locks that TSA officers can unlock with a master key—rather than having to cut locks. This suitcase truly caters to both the indoor and outdoor world.

Check Before You Fly: Will Your Luggage Pass Security?

One final note: No matter what piece of luggage you’re buying, don’t forget to make sure that your suitcase adheres to the airport security measures. American, Delta, and Alaska Airlines have stated that, beginning on January 15, 2018, they will only allow smart luggage with removable lithium-ion batteries on their flights. This is because batteries could overheat and start a fire. Other airlines may be making similar announcements in the future, as well.

With the variety of suitcases on the market, you should be able to find the perfect piece of luggage for that weekend trip to the mountains or the beach vacation you’ve been dreaming about all winter.
