Join the thousands of travelers who are trading their tents for treehouses at glamping sites worldwide.

This new trend blends all the natural beauty and excitement of camping with the luxury of a hotel. With a range of resort-style services, amenities, and comforts, you can explore the roads less traveled without having to blaze your own path.

What is Glamping?

While the term was coined in the early 2000s, the concept of glamping has been around for hundreds of years. In as early as the 16th century, European and Ottoman royalty pitched elaborate and highly ornate imperial tents each night while traveling with armies. And with them, they brought all the luxuries of their palaces from back home—tapestries, Persian rugs, beds, and chinaware.

In the early 20th century, Britain and America’s wealthy class became obsessed with African safari. Unwilling to let go of their usual comforts in the quest for adventure, these wealthy travelers—and their servants and guides—schlepped through the jungle with generators, bathroom conveniences, writing tables, large beds, and even book collections.

These days, you don’t need to be wealthy or a monarch to enjoy luxurious outdoor travel. Whether you’re staying in a safari tent, a yurt, a vintage caravan, a treehouse, or a large wood cabin, there are glamping opportunities in every price range.

Recently, hundreds of modern yet rustic glamping sites have popped up all around the world. Most sites consist of quasi-outdoor living to bring you closer to nature—but not too close!

Where to Glamp

In the San Francisco area, for example, you have a choice of renting a spacious safari tent in the surrounding woodlands or a cozy treehouse in Sonoma wine country. In other words: Going off the grid doesn’t have to mean sacrificing comfort.

Most glamping sites include running water, computers, electricity, refrigerators, coffeemakers, hair dryers, and outdoor grills for easier “campfire cooking.” Some locations even offer a spa!

One of the most popular international glamping sites, as another example, is the Four Seasons Golden Triangle in Thailand. There, you can spend your days hiking through remote bamboo forests and interacting with elephants in their natural habitat, and spend your nights enjoying wine-pairing dinners and a full spa treatment.

Over the past few years, glamping has taken the world by storm. And now, a simple internet search can connect you with one of the world’s finest glamping sites. To immerse yourself in authentic outdoor experiences and local cultures, Glamping.com is a detailed internet source for information about a wide range of glamp sites, including Longitude 131° in Australia’s Outback; Clayoquot on Vancouver Island, British Columbia; Four Rivers Floating Lodge, the world’s first floating tented luxury camp in Cambodia; and a desert luxury camp in Morocco called Merzouga.

Another fashion trend is the glamping opportunities popping up around large music festivals, such as the Cornbury Music Festival in Oxfordshire. This three-day English music festival offers nearby podpads, tents, caravans, tipis, and even a pop-up hotel.

For the uninitiated, podpads are cozy, decorated wooden huts that have solid floors, fitted carpet, shelving, interior lighting, and locks on the front doors that can typically accommodate two adults in single beds or one double. From a distance, a collection of podpads looks like a toy village!

One attraction of glamping for many people is that the outdoor hospitality industry offers a variety of unique experiences that can be more budget-friendly than a trip to Disney or overseas. If the budget only allows for a “staycation” a couple of hours from your home, the experience will likely be more fun, romantic, and memorable in a luxury yurt! Many of these options are appealing because they’re also eco-friendly.

Glamping is It For Wanabe Campers

Statistically, you’re less likely to consider camping as an adult if you weren’t introduced to the concept as a child. However, many baby boomers grew up camping with their families and still love the idea. Roughing it backcountry-style, however, doesn’t appeal to everyone. Most would rather escape the rat race to enjoy the great outdoors while sleeping on a supportive mattress. Now, with glamping, that is easily achieved.

Another thing that we can all appreciate is gourmet cooking! At Resort at Paws Up in Greenough, Montana, each camper gets a personal chef and butler. So, you can enjoy an evening under the stars, overlooking the scenic Blackfoot River, while munching on fresh-caught, pine nut-crusted trout.

Brides are also jumping on the glamping wagon with destination weddings planned at glamping campsites where all the guests can stay nearby and usually with fewer costs than at fancy hotels.

Glamping honeymoons are also gaining traction. Under Canvas Events, for instance, is a rapidly expanding company that specializes in luxury safari tent and tipi rentals for glamorous accommodations for weddings and corporate retreats all over Canada and the U.S. The Montana-based company can also help you find a private property or park location for your glamping event. Per its website: “Luxury camping tents create an original space of artful shelter while also allowing guests to interact with their surrounding landscape.”

An interesting sidebar to the glamping vacation trend is that some traditionally off-the-beaten-track activities can be accessed more readily through luxury camping, such as ice fishing, dog sledding, elephant trekking, and camel caravanning—just to name a few!

While glamping as an industry is still a bit too young to track statistics, travel agents and writers agree that the trend is growing.

[88,90

post-7215","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-winter-2018","category-winter-2018-features
["GET
