But you also want to make sure that you bring everything you’ll need. You never know how the weather may turn or what opportunities may arise. What you’ll actually need might seem like a no-brainer right now, but some things that you take for granted might slip your mind when you’re excitedly packing for your trip. Below is a list of a few clothing items that should never be missing from any traveler’s suitcase. Make sure to always be prepared!

1. A Lightweight Rain Jacket

TALBOTS TRI-COLOR STRIPED RAINCOAT IN IVORY MULTI. HELLO SAILOR CLASSIC COTTON-BLEND CREWNECK POPOVER IN IVORY MULTI. But the sad reality is that you can’t plan for everything in advance. And sometimes, something will happen where you just have to go with the flow, adjust, and cover up, so you can still enjoy the sights even in cases of a torrential downpour. The last thing you want to do is get caught in your hotel, stuck watching TV, so make sure you pack a light rain jacket that you can easily fold up to include in your suitcase. No one wants to have to use a rain jacket—or invite bad weather through the power of suggestion—but it’s always better to be safe rather than sorry.

CLUB ROOM MEN’S GRAY RAINSLICKER. But sometimes, a situation arises where Bermuda shorts and wrap skirts aren’t appropriate attire. So, it’s important to bring a few items of clothing that would work more as street clothes than what you’d wear at the poolside tiki bar. You might even find yourself going on a hike where it’s important to keep your legs covered to avoid bug bites, ticks, and scratches from untamed brush. Or you might not realize that the nights are actually cooler than you’d initially expected. That’s why you should always leave room for at least one good pair of dark-wash jeans in your bag. A classic pair of jeans—without any rips, holes, and crazy embellishments—are always in style and will help you with blending in with nearly any culture. So, even if you’re going on a European vacation, you can rest assured that you’ll remain stylish and blend in when you wear a pair of classic dark-wash jeans. Remember that rolling clothing items could help you in saving more room in your suitcase—this includes a pair of jeans if you roll them tight enough.

3. A Brimmed Hat for Sun Protection

LEFT: EUGENIA KIM GENIE BY EUGENIA KIM EMMANUELLE FEDORA. RIGHT: BP. TASSEL AND COINS STRAW FEDORA. PHOTOS: NORDSTROM.

No matter where you go, you’re going to be spending a lot of time outside when you’re exploring your vacation country of choice. And when you’re meandering through the cobblestone streets of a European city or strolling down the white-sand beaches of a Caribbean island, it can be easy to forget to stay properly protected against harmful sun exposure. In addition to sunscreen, a brimmed hat is always a good way to stay safe from the sun. And packing a hat that’s a little nicer than just a baseball cap will help you avoid looking too touristy. Even if you’re not typically a “hat person,” you should plan to wear one for some of the time on your vacation. You won’t be used to the amount of sun typical for the area, so it might be more difficult to gauge the amount of direct-sun exposure you’ll be able to handle.

4. A Bathing Suit

LEFT: SATURDAYS NYC TIMOTHY PARADISE SWIM SHORTS. RIGHT: SOLID & STRIPED THE ANNE MARIE ONE-PIECE SWIMSUIT.
PHOTOS: NORDSTROM.

A bathing suit is an obvious addition to your suitcase if you’re going on a beach vacation—you’ll actually probably want to bring multiple pairs. But even if you don’t anticipate there being an opportunity to need a swimsuit for where you’re going, bring one anyway. You never know when a situation might arise where you’ll want to go swimming. And having to give up an once-in-a-lifetime experience because you didn’t think you’d need to bring a bathing suit will definitely leave you kicking yourself. You might even find yourself using the hotel pool! A bathing suit is especially easy to roll up and include in your suitcase, so including it doesn’t cause much of a hassle.

No matter where you go on your special trip, you want to make sure that you and your plans are not inhibited by items you forgot to include on your packing list. You should definitely always leave a little space for the above items in your suitcase—even if you have to leave something else less important behind to make room for them. Remember: It’s better to have and not need than to need and not have.

[88,89

post-7224","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-winter-2018","category-winter-2018-columns
["GET
