"I race with the Rocky Mt. Masters Ski Series. Work is just a means to an end so that I can go ski race. I race for the freedom, the exhilaration and the speed. When skiing and racing, you are in a zone. Nothing else matters. You're totally focusing. My passion is to make perfect GS turns and to kick my friends' asses... ha, ha." Kevin Ward, Rocky Mountain Division of USSA Board Member, www.rmdussa.com

The Mad River Glen ski patrol was established in 1948 and has been an active organization both at the ski area and community.
Howard Martin still is a member(since1948) and is patrolling in his mid 80’s. Howard patrolled at the 1964 winter Olympics at Squaw valley. I am 62 and there are 10 members older than myself. The patrol is made up of about 65 people ranging in age from early twenties to the mid-eighties. The median age of the patrol is around 50. Most people patrol about 2-4 days per week and many in their 70’s ski 5-6 days a week. It is amazing how well the younger generation gets along with the seasoned veteran’s. They make us feel younger and maybe a little wisdom and experience filter’s down. No one really sees age on this patrol as a limiting factor. Any way they will probably be where I am in another 40 years.
Patrolling provides a reason to exercise and stay fit, keeps our minds sharp with all the annual recertification’s and training, camaraderie and lifelong friendships and a peacefulness enveloped by the mountains that make life purposeful and enjoying. It is the sense of purpose and usefulness that drives us though the pain so that we enjoy what may be the best that life has to offer. Check out www.madriverglen.com
