Mount Sinai Health System, one of New York’s largest integrated health system, announced today that it is expanding its highly successful model of medical care for older adults to downtown Manhattan, opening the Martha Stewart Center for Living at Mount Sinai-Union Square.

With a significant leadership gift from Martha Stewart, Mount Sinai will be expanding the pioneering Martha Stewart Center for Living at The Mount Sinai Hospital, creating a comprehensive downtown facility dedicated to ensuring the best quality of life for all older adults and their loved ones.

“My partnership with the Mount Sinai Health System continues to evolve as we expand services of the Martha Stewart Center for Living to downtown Manhattan, where the needs of older adults are currently underserved. When we opened the first Martha Stewart Center for Living in 2007 at The Mount Sinai Hospital in upper Manhattan, we introduced the nation to an innovative model of comprehensive care for older adults,” said Martha Stewart.

“From now until 2030, 10,000 baby boomers will turn 65 each day. This is the perfect time for leading academic medical centers and philanthropists to partner in improving care for this population and their parents. The new Martha Stewart Center for Living at Mount Sinai-Union Square will be a destination for the unprecedented numbers of aging Americans to receive world-class care.”

Jeremy Boal, MD, president of Mount Sinai Downtown, executive vice president and chief clinical officer of the Mount Sinai Health System, and geriatrician, said: “We are honored to once again collaborate with Martha Stewart and bring proven high-quality care to older adults in downtown Manhattan.

The Martha Stewart Center for Living is focused on enabling older adults to live healthy and more engaged lives. By placing the facility in Union Square, we’re creating a one-of-a-kind resource for older adults and their loved ones in the area, ensuring access to the full spectrum of services designed for these individuals.

It’s a model we know works, decreasing unwanted emergency room visits and improving wellness, as seen in our uptown Center for Living. I am grateful to Martha for her commitment and proud to offer this new facility to our communities.”

The Martha Stewart Center for Living at Mount Sinai-Union Square is expected to open in mid-June and represents the next step in Mount Sinai’s ongoing downtown transformation. The new Mount Sinai Downtown network, anchored by a new state-of-the-art Mount Sinai Beth Israel Hospital, will be an integrated system stretching from the East River to the Hudson River below 34th Street.

The downtown system, including the Martha Stewart Center, will offer full-service, comprehensive care at clinical Centers of Excellence including Mount Sinai Urgent Care at Union Square, the Mount Sinai – National Jewish Health Respiratory Institute at Union Square, Mount Sinai Heart at Union Square, the Mount Sinai Thyroid Center at 10 Union Square East, and more.

The new center creates a one-stop shop for patients and their caregivers, providing ready access to specialist physicians who provide primary care for older adults. Patients will also have access onsite to specialists from more than 20 disciplines, including cardiology, gastroenterology, cancer, dermatology, orthopedics, and rheumatology, as well as access to onsite radiology and physical therapy services. In addition the Center will also provide holistic living services such as tai chi, yoga, music therapy, nutrition planning, and fall prevention programs.

In 2008, inspired by her mother, Martha Kostyra—who lived an active life to the age of 93—Martha Stewart made a generous gift to Mount Sinai to create a holistic center to care for older adults through the launch of the Martha Stewart Center for Living at The Mount Sinai Hospital on the Upper East Side.

The emphasis of that facility continues to be on helping older adults and their loved ones attain the best quality of life possible. The result has been a highly successful model of care in which patients experience half as many emergency room visits as other older adults, shorter hospital stays when admitted, and 50 percent fewer readmissions after hospitaliziation.

Nathan Goldstein, MD, Professor of Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, and Chief of Geriatrics for Mount Sinai Downtown, said: “Ten years ago, Mount Sinai and Martha Stewart set out to remake care for older adults in upper Manhattan.

The idea was simple: give older adults the services and support they need to live with health and dignity. Once again, Mount Sinai is teaming up with Ms. Stewart to expand this model of care and bring these much-needed services to Manhattan’s downtown older adults. I want to thank Ms. Stewart for her exceptional generosity and look forward to opening this important new community resource.”
