find direction

Teenagers are often told that they don’t have enough direction, energy, or foresight to be smart enough to plan their future. Yet, every single teenager and young adult out there is a ball of potential waiting to be unleashed on the world. These young people have to take the initiative to MAKE their lives have a direction, but what do you do when you find yourself starting again at 50?

Life can change in an instant. Who could have imagined a pandemic to turn the world upside down? Just as devastating can be a divorce or job loss.

Parents help direct their children, but who helps adults later in life when they are faced with catastrophic changes and potential roadblocks?

What do you do when you’ve been thrust into a new environment or out of a comfortable relationship after years of support? It’s scary.

You could learn how to read tarot cards and see what your future holds, but there are no guarantees.

If you are at a crossroads of where to go next, here are tips to help you find your path once again in life.

1. Get Over “Overthinking”

It is very easy to get in your own way when it comes to carving out a path for your future, especially if you have recently lost your job. You probably go back and forth in your thoughts on decisions to make. You might doubt your choices and wrestle with what you want to happen next. All of this leads to our overthinking everything.

It’s hard to see as the cliché goes “the forest for the trees” when you are close to it. So sometimes it might be better for you simply to rely on your instincts.

If there is one thing that is common among seasoned adults, it’s an understanding of the risks of change. Perhaps, this is the time to really trust your instincts and stop over analyzing every single decision that you make as you plan your future. You might not be able to stare into a crystal ball and know what your future will be, but you can still make the right decisions for yourself.

2. Do Something – Anything

Action is so much better than sitting around and doing nothing. A big life change later in life is a shock, but you have to do something about it.

Want to make a career change? Dedicate a specific amount of time every day to research the possibilities and what skills you need for the job.

Unhappy with where you live? Get on the computer and start researching places that will make you happy. Feeling like you are out of shape from staying at home for months? Check out online exercise classes or just get out and walk or ride a bicycle TODAY.

Sure, the hardest part is getting started. However, once you start making a point of doing something about what you want from life, you will feel so much better about it.

3. Believe Your Inner Voice

There is a voice inside you that is telling you that you CAN make this next step count and do whatever you want to do. Sometimes, your inner voice is going to try to trip you up, but there will always be another, louder voice telling you what steps to take to get what you want from life.

You need to dig deep and believe that you can do the thing you want to do. Now is the time to follow that passion.

4. Make a Plan

Make a concise plan of action for your future to achieve your goals. It’s never too late to retrain yourself for a new career or passion. Where will your next passage take you?

Start with your goals. What have you dreamed of doing next? Museum CEO? Dog walking service provider? Bed and breakfast owner? Photographer? Personal trainer? Tour operator?

What training do you need to make the move? Your life experience has already prepared you in many ways. Taking specialty courses may be the tweak you need to launch your new career.

Next, list the steps you need to follow to achieve your goal. Include a realistic timeline for each step. Add these steps to your calendar and stick to the plan.

It can take time to find your feet for what comes next for your life. There is no one right answer to what is the best thing for your future. Take small steps, keep your eye on the goal, and go for it.

Don’t wait for tomorrow. Take the first step today.
