If you’ve thought of running at an older age, even in your 40s, and think you are too old, think again. Grab some inspiration from runner, 94-year old George “Scotty” Scott, who is competing Saturday at the Penn Relays, Philadelphia, PA.
About the Penn Relays
The Penn Relays began in 1895 and is now the longest uninterrupted collegiate track meet in the country. The event draws some 22,000 athletes from 60 countries in more than 425 races over 35 hours. The event takes place from April 23 to 25, 2015 on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania in center city Philadelphia.
Masters Events at Penn Relays
Masters range from 40 years old on up. For the 100m individual races there will be seven races in 5-year age groups from 40+ to 70+, each with a full field of 9 runners plus alternates.
For the 75+ group, there will be 15 entrants who will run in two heats. For the first time this year, the Relays will have an 85-year-old woman running in this race.
The oldest runner is retired Methodist minister from Haddonfield, New Jersey, Champ Goldy, who is 98. He has run in this race on multiple occasions in the past after getting his start in the New Jersey Senior Games when he was 70.
George Scott — All American
No newcomer to track events, George Scott is an all-American is several events.
Dave Marovich, friend and trainer, said “George is probably the fastest guy in the United States in his age group which is 90 to 95. His running is really great. He’s run a 19.8 in the 100 and the American standard is something like 23 seconds.”
Scott who lives at the Ann’s Choice retirement community in Warminster, PA, will compete in the 100-meter dash on Saturday. His event is the “Masters Men’s 75 and older” at 3:40PM
“I’m all ready… I’m trying my best,” said Scott.
