Since 1992 when we created September is Healthy Aging Month, as part of the national Healthy Aging® Campaign, we have helped educate the public on the positive issues of aging. We now celebrate U.S. Senators Tim Scott and Mark Kelly on the Senate’s unanimous passage of their resolution marking September as National Healthy Aging Month.
Details on September is Healthy Aging Month:
The U.S. Senate unanimously passed the resolution marking September as National Healthy Aging Month. The observance month began almost 30 years ago thanks to the efforts of Educational Television Network, Inc., a 501C3 non-profit, to continue to draw attention to healthy, active lifestyles at any age. September was chosen as a second time of the year in addition to May is Older Americans Month.
Health professionals and educators across the country have used the opportunity to educate the public on the positive aspects of growing older, particularly in the areas of physical, social, mental, and financial wellness.
U.S. Senators Tim Scott (R-S.C.) and Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.) released the following statements applauding the Senate’s unanimous passage of their resolution marking September as National Healthy Aging Month.
“In just a few short years, seniors will outnumber children for the first time in our nation’s history,” said Senator Scott. “As our older population increases, we must also bolster our efforts to enhance their quality of life. This resolution not only reaffirms that commitment to seniors, but it also encourages all Americans to prepare for the future by living a healthy lifestyle today.”
“As Arizona’s Senator and a member of the Senate Special Committee on Aging, I have continued to work to support older Arizonans by funding critical programs for our senior community including caregiver support and community based services,” said Senator Mark Kelly. “This resolution recognizing September as Healthy Aging Month is an important step and will raise awareness about the ways Arizonans can improve their health and quality of life as they age and also promote strategies and services that can prevent chronic or serious illnesses.”
Further Background:
As ranking member of the U.S. Special Senate Committee on Aging, Senator Scott has worked on a number of bills, resolutions, and hearings on behalf of our nation’s seniors.
In May, he introduced the SENIOR CARE Act to ensure working seniors with disabilities keep Medicaid coverage.
In July, he introduced the Golden-preneurship Act to equip seniors with the tools they need to make their businesses thrive.
Since March, he has held hearings on addressing seniors’ health care needs, fighting Alzheimer’s, building wealth at an older age, maintaining physical and mental vitality, and most recently combating frauds and scams.
